Under Box EFI Ready Fuel Tanks for your Classic Truck
A half century ago, the truck engineers and designers at Ford and GM likely had no idea that they were creating classics that would be restored, driven, and appreciated by future generations. Utility was first on their minds, and what better place to put the gas tank that in the dead space behind the seat? Great for making more room in the bed for lumber, but not so great for a lot of other reasons. If you’ve ever had one of these trucks, you know that the cab always smells just a little gassy and the sound of sloshing fuel right behind you is always a bit unnerving. In modern traffic, flying down the road with 20 gallons of gas riding shotgun is no longer a safe idea.
So, what should I do with my fuel tank?
Aftermarket tanks that mount under the rear of the bed are nothing new. Speedway Motors has had a line of them available for a few years now. They’re fabricated from aluminum right here in our Lincoln, Nebraska shop and offer a neat solution to the age-old fuel tank problem. They are a direct-fit and come with flanges that allow them to be bolted into the rear of the frame. They come with a provision for an aftermarket fuel-level sender and are designed to work with an aftermarket fuel filler in the bed floor. We even offer kits that come with everything you need for the install. As an extra bonus, they also free up that space behind the seat for tools and spare parts.
What if I want to run EFI?
You can be sure that those mid-century truck designers would never have guessed that we’d be running fuel injected, high performance engines in these old trucks that require lots of fuel to be delivered at 60 pounds of pressure. While any of our tanks will work with an external pump, we’re excited to announce that these truck tanks are now available in an EFI-ready version with baffles and a mounting ring to accept an in-tank submersible fuel pump. They are perfect for LS swaps and work great with our economical EFI retrofit pump module.
Will they fit my truck?
Currently, both versions of these tanks are available for ’48-’60 Ford trucks, ’47-’53 Chevy trucks, ’55-’59 Chevy trucks, and ’63-’72 Chevy trucks. There’s also a new version in the works for you ’73-’87 Square Body Chevy fans.
Ready to get that crusty, stinky old tank out from behind your seat? Speedway Motors has you covered. Swapping to EFI or a late model powerplant? We can check that box as well. All in a good-looking, custom fabricated, made in the USA package.
