In this Tech Tip, John explains the design behind a set of headers destined for a Tri-5 using a traditional rack and pinion style steering system.

“Hey, I just received my headers I ordered earlier this week, look great and fast shipping, will defiantly be making more purchases from you guys. I was wondering if you have any pictures of the unisteer power steering conversion with these headers or similar headers complete. I expected the fit to be a bit tighter to the engine header to allow my steering shaft to go around but it looks like the steering shaft is expected to go between the back two pipes, any additional info on this conversion would be great. I haven't purchased my steering shaft or u-joints due to the fact I'm not sure exactly what I need! Sorry for the lengthy description, and thanks for the great service in advance!”

Hi, thanks for the question. You asked about the Tri-5 headers for rack and pinion and you are correct that the shaft will go thru the tubes for the rear cylinders. The rack and pinion is number 91032246 and if you look it up on our website and you can click on the small photo to get a larger picture. Also on the product page are .pdf instructions that you can open to view the installation. The headers carry these notations. If you are running our Unisteer rack & pinion, you will need these headers. They allow the steering shaft to pass through on the driver's side and are a shorty style for maximum ground clearance. They feature 1-5/8" primaries with a 3" collector. Feel free to visit us on the web at www.speedwaymotors.com or call 1-800-979-0122 with questions or to place an order.
